The 2035 Initiative is a collaboration between world-leading environmental politics and policy research labs at the University of California Santa Barbara. We are developing political and policy roadmaps to stabilize the Earth’s climate and achieve a carbon-free energy system by 2035.

Energy Governance and Political Economy (EGAPE) Lab

Studying the role of government in industry and the design of policies that will mitigate rather than exacerbate climate change.

Studying how politics shapes the policies that we do (or don’t) get from the political system, with a particular focus on congressional politics.

Anderson Research Group

Studying environmental politics, public opinion, and elections.

Social Climate Science (SCS) Lab

Advancing social psychological theorizing in the domain of environment and sustainability and to identify novel approaches for understanding and mitigating the social and psychological consequences of climate change. Drawing on theories and methodologies from social, cultural, political, and health psychology, the SCS Lab is in search of global solutions for the global problem of climate change.

Energy and Environment Transitions (ENVENT) Lab

Studying the political dimensions of climate and energy policy.

Environment & Development Lab (EDL)

Studying how governments and international organizations can be made accountable for delivering environmental and development policy goals.

Observatory of Environmental Justice

Studying what types of individuals and communities are most affected by different forms of environmental degradation, what explains that some of them are more likely to organize in response to such challenges than others, and the drivers of success behind these forms of resistance; the observatory will also support a network of scholars (from natural and social sciences as well as humanities), practitioners, and members of civic organizations working on environmental justice across Latin America and the United States.
